Founded in 1528, Praia do Forte is today the point with the greatest variety of activities, as well as the ideal starting point for excursions along the North Coast of Bahia, for it allows quick access to beaches and reserves, and the return to the village to enjoy dinner in any of their great restaurants. In fact, apart from the cultural, ecological, and aesthetic interest that the town arouses, Praia do Forte boasts the Garcia D’Ávila Castle, the Tamar Project, the Baleia Jubarte Project and the Sapiranga Reserve. If you prefer a oceanic itinerary, maybe go out to see the whales, or simply enjoy snorkeling, seeing the multicolored fish come to eat out of your hand. Depending on the season, there are shows on the beach, on the street, and restaurants with live music of different styles.
The colonial-style chapel was built in 1900 by the initiative of fishermen, to honor and adore their patron saint. San Francisco, protector of turtles, whales, and lighthouses, has watched over the decades as sea creatures migrate, fantastic procession, by his side. The back against the east wind, the main door and his face turned to the village, devout and protected, he watches generations of fishermen pass by, to the sea, and return, with the fresh fruit of their artisanal work, which right there, under his gaze, is weighed and divided.
Praia do Forte's TAMAR Museum was created in 1982. Between tanks and aquariums, there are 600,000 liters of salt water with specimens of the region's marine fauna and four of the five species of sea turtles that occur in Brazil, at different stages of the life cycle. All this places the Museum among the 5 most visited in Brazil.
Every year Praia do Forte becomes a great meeting point for singing whales. The Jubarte, in the months of July and October, exchange the icy waters of Antarctica for the warm and pleasant sea of the coast of Bahia, where they sing, perform acrobatics and spray jets of water 3 meters high. It's impossible not to feel small in front of this docile mammal that can measure 16 meters and weigh 40 tons.
